Truffles

The black diamonds of Provence

Provence makes up for 80 % of French truffle production, and it’s in the Vaucluse area in Richerenches and Carpentras (just 30 minutes from the hotel) that you’ll find the two most important truffle markets in the world. Every Saturday morning from December to mid-March, thousands of truffle producers come together at the truffle market in Richerenches.
The shining star of our gastronomy, the truffle, called “rabasse” in Provençal, is a mushroom with an entrancing aroma and an exquisite taste that you can find in many different varieties from our doorstep. These include the summer truffle (Aestivum), the autumn truffle (Uncinatum), and the winter truffle, also known as the French black truffle (Melanosporum).

If you want to find out more about this black diamond, head to the Musée de la Truffe et du Vin de Richerenches (Richerenches Truffle and Wine Museum), located in the superb Commanderie des Templiers. The museum presents key insights into life in Richerenches, a Provençal village in the Haut Vaucluse in the Papal Enclave, which is a wine-making village as much as it is a truffle-producing village. Another unmissable destination for lovers of truffles is the Maison de la Truffe et du Tricastin (Museum of the Truffle and Tricastin) in Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux in the Drôme, just 25 km from the hotel. A major site of truffle production, the Tricastin region crosses both the Drôme and the Vaucluse, the main truffle-producing departments of France.
